CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Maggie looked around, searching in the crowd for any sign of Ferrow. They’d decided none of them would leave without checking in with the others first, so unless something had happened to her, too—

No, she wasn’t thinking about that. It wasn’t even going to be a possibility. Never mind that someone had gotten to Cole, Ferrow would still be fine. Ferrow had to be fine. Ferrow was always fine.

She gasped as she became aware of a hand on her shoulder, and she flailed backward only to have her hand caught. “Maggie, it’s me!” said a familiar voice.

The panic cleared from her vision, and she realized who it was. Ferrow ex machina to the rescue. “Oh, thank God it’s you. I thought maybe something had happened to you too, and—”

Ferrow shushed her, taking the phone from Maggie’s other hand and bringing it to her ear. “Yes, hi, sorry. Yes, I’d like to report an emergency—medical. Trinity. Do you need the address? No, okay, great. Sure. Friend of ours, name is Cole Antonietti. Human, late twenties, I think. Looks like it might be an overdose. Yeah, I can stay on the line. Fifteen minutes? Okay, thanks. Do you want us to move him to the entrance? Okay.”

She tucked the phone between her jaw and shoulder and looked at Maggie. “They say to keep him here. Roll him onto his side if we can.”

“No problem.” Maggie was grateful for something to do. She repositioned herself, then gently rolled Cole onto his side. “The shaking is slowing down.”

Ferrow relayed this to the dispatcher. “What’s his pulse like?” she asked.

Maggie checked it. “Still fast. Really fast.”

“Hey, everything okay?” interrupted another voice, and Ferrow and Maggie looked up to see Alice, Trinity’s regular bartender. “I just got in for my shift, and people aren’t usually on the floor.”

“We think he OD’ed.” Maggie gestured at Cole. “I found him like this a couple of minutes ago. An ambulance is on the way. Ferrow’s still on the phone with 911.”

Alice’s face paled. “Oh, shit. Not again. Do you think it’s that—whatever it is that’s going around?”

“Could be,” Ferrow said.

“God. Just what we need.”
